Herbal Tea (Decoction)
To Make the Decoction:
-> add all the herbs with the water in a glass or ceramic pot. Stir with a ceramic or wooden spoon to ensure all the herbs get under the water. Let come to a boil, then simmer on low 30-45 minutes to reduce to half (2 cups). Strain out herbs using a fine mesh sieve. The tea is ready to drink. If you like, when the herbs cool enough to handle, you can squeeze out any tea, strain, and then compost the herbs.
To Make the Herbal Elixir:
-> add 1 cup of tea plus the rest of the ingredients in a glass or ceramic pot, stirring to dissolve. If your tea is piping hot, add all the ingredients and stir to dissolve. You can also blend everything in a high speed blender. Add stevia to sweeten and any unsweetened non-dairy milk, if desired.
The herbal tea can be drunk on its own ---sweetened with stevia if you like, and even non-dairy milk can be added to it--- OR it can be turned into a protein-rich, hot chocolate herbal elixir!
The herbal tea consists of 2 formulas that were added together and adapted by Michael Tierra in his book Planetary Herbology.
The tea has a cool, detoxifying energy. In TCM lingo, it is useful for damp heat conditions, to purify blood and to remove toxins, such as:
All of the main herbs ---Echinacea, Pau d'arco, Yellow Dock, Sarsaparilla, HoneySuckle, Forsythia and even Bupleurum--- are to help the liver with detoxifying the blood. Shiitake mushroom and Turmeric help to boost the immune system and are anti-inflammatory. Mint adds to the cooling effect of the formula while Licorice helps to balance the taste of the bitter herbs.
If you are taking the tea to clear toxins or for skin or cancer issues, you can add 1-2 TBsp whole Marshmallow root to the pot with the rest of the herbs.
If you have leaky gut, it's better to consume both Marshmallow and Slippery Elm as powders, adding them into a mug, pouring the hot tea over them and then stirring to combine. You can now add stevia to sweeten and even some non-dairy milk. If you only have whole Marshmallow root, then add it to the pot with the rest of the herbs and boil it down. Add the powdered Slippery Elm to a mug and then add the strained tea.
If you want to change the taste of the tea from time to time, that's where the fun of making an herbal elixir comes in! In this case, greens, hemp and mesquite add that protein punch, while mesquite lends a slight caramel taste. Instead of stimulating chocolate (which you should be avoiding, as well as other stimulants such as coffee, onions, garlic and heating spices like curry and thai), carob subs in as an excellent substitute. There is a difference between untoasted and toasted carob: untoasted has a much mellower, chocolately taste and is alkaline while toasted has a bitter taste and is acidic. If you do finding yourself reacting (i.e., having digestive distress), do remember that carob is in the legume family, so simply omit it or just stick with the tea version.
Final notes: you can add more water to the pot if you like, say 6 cups and then boil it down to 3-4 cups. If you find the tea too rich, simply dilute it with water before drinking.
Poria, also known as Poria Cocos, Fu Ling, Tukahoe, Hoelen, Fu Shen and Indian Bread, is a Chinese mushroom (the sclerotium) that is a mild diuretic. It has a pleasant taste and is even given to children to support their growth and development. Best found in Asian Markets, although you might find it online.
